The Status of Women in Imam Khomeini’s View

The Status of Women in Imam Khomeini’s ViewIntroduction

The history of mankind is filled with many despotisms which were imposed on less fortunate and innocent people by the tyrants and bullies, and in the midst of everything, women, as half of the population of humanity, not only have endured the historical share of tyranny, but they have dealt with the added oppression which requires a greater space to be explained. Upon the expansion of the new civilization, i.e. the western dominant culture, it nearly influenced all the nations that were less historical, cultural, social and religious, and it has ruined or taken over some civilizations which had surrendered to this trend.

A woman is a divine being who, in the revolutionary school of Imam Khomeini – which represents pure Islam –, is promised freedom and human qualities more than men. Throughout history and under the ruling of profanity and polytheism of the old and new trends, women have always been led into enslavement. The pure materialistic and even abject portrayals of women in various historical times have manifested themselves in the worst possible form at the current time. The outcomes of the plots designed and implemented by devilish functionaries have turned the divine aspects of women upside down. The victory of the Islamic revolution of Iran with Imam Khomeini’s leadership offered a different viewpoint toward women. A glance at the situation of women before and after the Islamic revolution clearly shows that the previous criteria and measures entangled the individuality of women to the extent that consumed their traits as facilitating tools to fulfill men’s unlawful desires; whereas, after the triumph of the revolution, a lot of stress has been placed on maintaining the nobility and development of women.

The Periods of the Captivity of Women according to Imam Khomeini

An extensive look at history shows that various social communities imposed a lot of cruelty and injustice on women one way or the other. According to Imam Khomeini, the historical oppressed situation of women is categorized into two eras: “the Age of Ignorance” and “the Pahlavi era”. At both times, the plight of women had been greater than men or, in some occasions, incomparable to them. “During the reign of Reza Khan which was the beginning of Pahlavi’s Age of Ignorance, he –as the protégé of the West- made a huge effort to corrupt the culture and history of Iran. The women were subjected to his despotism more than men; in the beginning, women voluntarily and later under compelling circumstances were captivated through deceptive models the government offered. They took advantage of women by fulfilling their satanic purposes and unlawful needs. It is obvious that the women who opposed even slightly to the current opinions and situations imposed by the governors of the time would be bothered eventually due to the despotic nature of the government, and they would be deprived of their natural rights on the pretense of defending the freedom. On the other hand, based on this approach, the social presence of women was summarized into the commercial use of the presence of women in the society.” (Sahifeh Noor - 3rd vol.)

Women had two positive and influential roles in the victory of the Islamic revolution; the first role was their direct and positive participation in the fight itself, and their second role which had a greater impact was their ability to show patience, cooperation, and endurance against the hardships of the struggle. Many women in the Islamic revolution encouraged their husbands, and in the revolution, the fighters’ wives were the ones who stood firm against the problems. In the last couple of years of the fight for revolution, the role of women in the triumph of the Islamic revolution and the great upheaval of the people were noticed all of a sudden, and women initiated the first heroic demonstration and displayed their active and notable participation in the highly perilous combat zones.

The Status of Women in Imam Khomeini’s View

In general, the value of mankind in the viewpoint of Imam Khomeini is defined through “humanity” which is emphasized by the Qur’an, too. The status and individuality of human beings as well as their rights of freedom have a structure which has been provided by the Islamic teachings and the brilliant commandments of Qur’an. Outside these holy borders, the human status of mankind is manipulated by the carnal desires of dishonest people, and it will not have a genuine definition and content anymore.

(O Marium! keep to obedience to your Lord and humble yourself, and bow down with those who bow.) Al-E-Imran: 43

According to the great leader of the revolution, Fatimah and Zainab (peace be upon their souls) are two appropriate role models whom Muslim women should follow in every arena, since they are the two women in whom the human identity is manifested.

They are the honor of the family of revelation and shine over the summit of Islam. Fatimah is a woman whose virtues are at the same level as the infinite virtues of the Prophet Muhammad and his descendants. The woman whom many –with various viewpoints - have talked about but their words fell short on praising her. The lady of the World of Islam is a holy and spiritual woman and a true human being. She is the true face of humanity and the women. (Sahifeh Noor, 6th vol.) She is a divine and heavenly being who has appeared as a woman; a woman who has gathered all the characteristics of prophets within herself. She is the one who has commenced her spiritual journey from nature, and through the power of God and the training of the Prophet Muhammad, she has reached such a stance that no one can compete with her. This woman has been the purpose of the creation and the interpretation of “hayya ala khair al-amal” is referring to “doing good to her and her children”. (Bihar Al-Anvar, 43rd vol.)

Regarding the status and greatness of women in Islam, Imam Khomeini has stated: “The prosperity and wretchedness of mankind depends on women since they are the educators of the human beings; women shape real human beings through their proper training, and all the happiness and good deeds originate from women.” He also adds: “If brave women are taken away from nations, the nations will succumb to defeat and decadence.”

The Social and Cultural Stance of Women in Imam Khomeini’s Thinking

The ten-year-old superb leadership of Imam Khomeini caused the accessibility to his opinions to go beyond pure theories, and both the theories and the practical examples became available to everyone. This advantage makes Imam Khomeini’s thoughts superior to the thoughts of the other Muslim thinkers and connoisseurs. In a quick glance, the sublime measures of the social life of women can be identified in his point of view. It is quite surprising to see that the status of women is placed higher than men in this faith related arena.

In the Islamic point of view which emphasizes on the potential of women to develop themselves, the participation of women in the social and political matters is not prohibited and it is a sign of maturity and faith; however, the participation of women requires some formalities. As Imam Khomeini has stated: “Today, women should perform their social and religious duties and maintain public modesty and accomplish political-social activities with respect to public modesty.” (Tebiyan, the article titled ‘The Status of Women in the Viewpoint of Imam Khomeini’)

Motherhood is the primary stance of women in the society and is responsible for the survival of the human societies. At this stand, women are considered at the same level with the prophets. This concept, unfortunately, has lost its true value in the material standpoint. The insight of Imam Khomeini examines the heart of the matters and explains them to common people with a simple rhetoric. In his point of view, women are in charge of the purification and constructiveness of the society.

The corruption of human societies –the western societies in particular- and lack of solidity in families, as well as not abiding with the moral principles, stem from ignoring the motherhood responsibilities. The happiness and the wretchedness of nations and countries have profound and genuine ties with the presence of women. A woman can be the origin of the happiness for a society and the blessings of her being can establish the endurance of a society. The opposite of this situation is true as well. Based on Imam Khomeini’s view, the fundamental role of women in the survival of societies has been greater than the role of men and he has expressed it beautifully in the following statements: “Men are producers of nations and women more so; and the appropriate structures of countries are built through the capable power of women.”

Contrary to some opinions, Hijab, or Islamic cover, protects women from inappropriate gazes and prevents their human personality and worth from being treated like a tradable good in the society. Under the protection of Hijab, the nobility and individuality of women is preserved. Imam Khomeini expresses his opinion in regards to Hijab and its role in the society: “Of course, the type of Hijab that Islam requires you to observe is to protect your values. What God has commanded, either for men or women, is to protect their true values from the satanic temptations which might be implemented on them by the expansionists. Hijab is for reviving these values.”

With regards to the role of women in the society, Imam Khomeini has said: “In the Islamic government, women along with men can actively contribute to the erection of an Islamic society as human beings and not as objects. Neither women are allowed to lessen themselves to a low stance nor do men have the right to think of them in that context.”

Women and Politics in Imam Khomeini’s viewpoint

The Islamic revolution in Iran transformed the status of women in the society profoundly. The women who even refused to attend educational centers due to the intellectual contradictions they had with the government of the time welcomed the new thinking of Imam Khomeini, and broke out of the tight traditional boundaries and participated in the revolution as one of the main elements of the movement. At the time that women could not appear in the society without their husbands’ permission, the presence of women in the street demonstrations and various scenes of the revolution transformed their traditional role completely. With their extensive presence, women objected to the marginal role which was imposed on them during the years, and requested the dominant perspective on women to be revised. After the Islamic revolution, not only the presence and cooperation of women in various fields did not decline (according to statistics), but we are witnessing their increasing contributions to various arenas. Although, it should be noted that so far no scientific evaluation has been carried out in regards to the growth of women’s contribution to the political activities. However, a brief look at Iran’s revolution in general and Imam Khomeini’s thinking in particular shows a shift of perspective on the Muslim women.

Imam Khomeini’s opinion in regards to the religion and politics is clear in the interpretation he offers about the Kauthar.

Hence, Fatimah becomes the symbol of the relationship between the religion and politics. Aside from this profound spiritual interpretation which clears the air about the ties of the religion and politics, Fatimah is the symbol of a political faith.

Imam Khomeini believed that the pretension of Muslim women resorting to the way of Fatimah is not appropriate, and if they do not act according to what they say they believe, they are considered to be lying. According to Imam, if the Iranian Shiite Muslim women do not follow the path of Fatimah in piety, living simply and God-worshiping, they should know that they are not entitled to the Women’s Day, and they will not be sharing the honor of this day. Many times in his speeches, Imam Khomeini highlighted and praised the important role of women in the victory of the Islamic revolution. He believed that the participation of women during the revolution blessed and advanced this phenomenon: “This was a phenomenon beyond man’s power.

This was a divine phenomenon; the One who transformed the hearts took care of this phenomenon. He cleared the hearts from fear they had from the [Pahlavi] regime and gave them bravery and the ability to decide instead. That is how women, men and children rose to fight.”

The Last Word

Imam Khomeini believed in the important role of women in all the political, social and cultural arenas. His statements during the most critical times of the history of our country endorse this fact. For example, during the imposed Iraq-Iran war, he said: “The women who are serving behind the front lines with no consideration to rank or fame are anonymous soldiers who are the soldiers performing Jihad.”

In conclusion, it is appropriate to follow the testaments of Imam Khomeini; the Imam who promised to serve God, and promised to stay unanimous to his companions.

Oh Imam! The history has a lot of stories; but it will more beautifully retell the story of a mentor who earnestly learned the alphabet of love in the school of faith, and lived lovingly, stood bravely to overthrow the oppressors, and taught the art of being and the form of eternity in all eras.

“We are honored that women, either young or elderly, are participating in the cultural, economical and marital scenes along with or even better than men in order to exalt the Islam and the purposes of Qur’an … and they have courageously and promisingly got themselves rid of the deprivations which were imposed on them by the enemies’ plot and untruthful interpretation of some inexpert allies; they have also freed themselves from the superstitions that the enemy had provided to some fools and few uninformed mullahs.” (Sahifeh Noor, 21st vol.)

We ask God to fill our hearts with Imam’s memory, lead our way according to Imam’s path, and adorn our words with Imam’s words.

Israeli forces destroy Palestinian village Makhool

Israeli forces have attacked a Palestinian village north of the Jordan Valley for the fourth time since September, leaving some 100 residents without shelter, Press TV reports.

Israeli bulldozers backed by military jeeps entered the village of Makhool in the early hours of Thursday morning and evacuated the residents before destroying the village.

The Israeli soldiers further seized two tents and confiscated all materials that had been provided to them by European Humanitarian aid agencies.

“The army attacked us while we were sleeping and forced us to leave our tents before they destroyed everything. When they finished, they collected all the plastic and burned them before confiscating the iron structures,” said a village resident.

“Every time we build anything, a tent or barracks, they demolish them. Even the presence of diplomats makes no difference,” he added.

Following the demolition, foreign diplomats visited the area and donated tents and humanitarian aid, but the Israeli army forcibly removed them from the area. French diplomat Marion Fesneau-Castaing was dragged out of an aid truck by an Israeli soldier, who later confiscated the vehicle.

The attack on the foreign diplomats prompted European Union's foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton to demand an explanation from Israeli authorities. Tel Aviv responded by blaming Palestinians, stating it was a closed military zone and the residents had no permission to live there.

The Israeli army had previously destroyed the entire village on September 16, leaving 10 families and 16 children homeless.

The villagers say they have been left homeless for the fourth time and that Israel has violently prevented national and international organizations from intervening and helping them to rebuild their homes.

“From September 16th, this place has been attacked continuously and only God knows the real situation,” said another resident of Makhool.

“We’ll stay on this land until our death and we will not give up,” he noted.

Makhool is situated in area C of the West Bank which remains under full Israeli military control.

Demolitions are commonplace in the Jordan Valley as Tel Aviv’s policy of settlement expansion is escalating in the area.

Residents have called upon international bodies to pressurize Israel into halting these arbitrary demolitions, saying the regime is attempting to Judaize the area.

UN blames Italy migrant policies for boat incident

A UN official has blamed Italy’s strict policies toward irregular migrants for the death of at least 93 people in a boat incident in the country.

"Treating irregular migrants only by repressive measures would create these tragedies," said Francois Crepeau, the United Nations special rapporteur on the human rights of migrants, on Thursday, adding, "Irregular immigration is not a crime against persons or property or security... 99.99 percent of irregular migrants pose no threat to security."

His comments came after a boat carrying some 500 people caught fire and capsized near the Italian island of Lampedusa.

"These deaths did not need to happen," he said, adding that the “criminalization of irregular immigration" had played a role in the incident.

After the incident, Giusi Nicolini, the local mayor of Lampedusa, said that emergency workers found 93 bodies, including those of two children and several women.

“The survivors are in a state of shock. They have been in the water since the early hours of the morning,” Nicolini said.

A total of 151 people have been rescued so far.

The asylum-seekers said they were from Eritrea and Somalia. The vessel is believed to have left from Libyan shores.

Lampedusa is an Italian island that lies between Tunisia and Sicily and is a main entrance for asylum-seekers to the European Union.

The fatal accident is the latest in a string of drowning incidents involving migrants traveling on wobbly fishing boats or rubber dinghies in the Mediterranean.

On September 30, more than 10 Eritrean asylum-seekers died as they desperately tried to reach the shore when their boat went aground off Sicily near the city of Ragusa.

In August, six Egyptian men lost their lives in a similar incident near Catania in another part of Sicily.

Egypt: Growing Interest in Shi’ism Following Allameh Shehata’s Martyrdom

Egyptians have become more interested in Shia Islam following the martyrdom of Allameh Hassan Shehata, Buratha news agency reports.
The country’s bookstores are seeing a significant rise in selling Shia books just days after Allameh Shehata and four other Shi’ites were killed by extremist Takfiri mobs.

Mohammad Sayyid Subhi, a book seller in Cairo, says university scholars, students, and ordinary people are buying Shia books to know more about this Islamic school of thought.

Sayyid Mukhtar Al-Sherbini, owner of a bookstore in Nasr Street of Cairo, agrees. “Today, I saw an unprecedented number of people coming to buy Shia books. Seeing such an enthusiasm, we intend to make a trip to Iraq and bring in books about Jafari Shia School.”

Mustafa Tharwat, director of Al-Sayyida Library in Egypt’s Capital, says the recent massacre of Shia Muslims by radial Salafis has caused many to reject what the extremists say about Shi’ites.

Prominent Egyptian Shia cleric, Sheikh Hassan Shehata, and three of his devotees were killed in a brutal attack carried out by Takfiri extremists in Giza Province near Cairo.

The attack was carried out on Sunday, June 23, when a crowd of several hundred assailants attacked Sheikh Shehata’s home and then set it on fire at the village of Abu Mussalam.

Brutal scenes of the crime were posted on the internet late Sunday, showing men dragging Sheikh Shehata’s bloody body on the street and beating him as the Sheikh chanted “Allahu Akbar [God is Great].”

Je Mashia wanaamini Qur'an nyingine?

Kwa hakika sisi tumeuteremsha ukumbusho huu (Qur'an) na hakika sisi ndio tuulindao (Qur'an: Sura 15, Aya 9).
Mashia mara kwa mara tumetuhumiwa kwa imani ya Tahrif ndani ya Qur'an, ambayo maana yake ni kuamini kwamba Qur'an imepotoshwa na haiko sawa na ile aliyoteremshiwa Mtume Muhammad (s.a.w.w.).

-       Shaykh al-Saduq (aliyefariki 381 AH), Kitabu'l-Itiqadat, (Teheran.1370) Uk. 63;
-       Shaykh al-Mufid (aliyefariki 413 AH), Awa'ilu l-Maqalat, Uk. 55-6;
-       Sharif al-Murtadha (aliyefariki 436 AH), Bahru 'l-Fawa'id (Teh, 1314) Uk. 69;
-       Shaykh at-Tusi (aliyefariki 460 AH), Tafsir at-Tibyan, (Najaf, 1376), Juz. 1 Uk. 3;
-       Shaykh at-Tabrasi (548AH), Majma'u 'l-Bayan, (Lebanon), Juz. 1 Uk. 15.

-       Muhammad Muhsin al-Fayd al-Kashani (aliyefariki 1019 AH), Al-Wafi, Juz. 1 Uk.273-4,
-       al-'Asfa fi Tafsir al-Qur'an, Uk. 348;
-       Muhammad Baqir al-Majlisi (aliyefariki 1111 AH), Bihar al-'Anwar, Juz 89 Uk. 75.

-       Sayyid Muhsin al-Amin al-'Amili (aliyefariki 1371 AH);
-       Sayyid Sharaf al-Dinal-Musawi (aliyefariki 1377 AH.);
-       Shaykh Muhammad Husein Kashif al-Ghita' (aliyefariki 1373 AH);
-       Sayyid Muhsin al-Hakim (aliyefariki 1390 AH);
-       'Allamah at-Tabataba'i (aliyefariki 1402 AH);
-       Sayyid Ruhullah al-Khumayni (aliyefariki 1409 AH);
-       Sayyid Abu al-Qasim al-Khu'i (aliyefariki 1413 AH)
-       Sayyid Muhammad Ridha al-Gulpaygani (aliyefariki 1414 AH).
Hii, kwa kweli, si orodha nzima.

Swali: Lakini ni vipi kuhusu Mashia waliokuwapo kabla ya Wanavyuoni hawa, je wao waliamini tahrif?
Hapana!

wanasema nini kumhusu 'Ubaydullah b.
mtu mwenye cheo kikuu katika elimu ya Qur’an...”
[Al-Dhahabi, Tadhkirat al-Huffaz (Haydarabad, 1333 AH), Juz. 1 Uk. 322]
[Ibn al-'Imad al-Hanbali, Shadharat al-Dhahab (Cairo, 1350 AH), Juz. 2 Uk. 29]
[The Creed of the Imaam of Hadeeth al-Bukhari (Salafi Pub., UK, 1997), Uk. 87-89]

Hakuna kamwe “Qur'an ya Fatimah”!

_ “Ubayy b. Ka'b alikuwa akisoma ‘…basi wale mnao faidi nao kwa kipindi maalum, wapeni mahari yao kama ilivyoamriwa…’ (Qur'an, Sura 4, Aya 24), na Ibn Abbas pia alikuwa akisoma hivyo hivyo.”
[Fakhr al-Din al-Razi, Mafatih al-Ghayb (Beirut, 1981), Juz. 9 Uk. 53]
[Ibn Kathir, Tafsir al-Qur'an al-'Adhim (Beirut, 1987), Juz. 2 Uk. 244]

(Qur'an Sura 5, Aya 67).
[Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti, Durr al-Manthur, Juz. 2 Uk. 298]

Hitimisho:
“Sisi MASHIA twaamini kwamba Qur'an ambayo Mwenyezi Mungu alimteremshia Mtume wake Muhammad (s.a.w.w.) ni kama ile iliyoko baina ya jalada mbili. Na ndiyo hiyo hiyo iliyoko mikononi kwa watu.
Na anayedai kuwa sisi tunasema kwamba (Qur’an) ni tofauti kuliko hii (ya
sasa), huyo ni muongo.”
[As-Saduq, Kitabu'l-I`tiqadat (Tehran: 1370 AH) Uk. 63; Tafsir ya kiingereza,
The Shi'ite Creed, tr. A.A.A. Fyzee (Calcutta: 1942) Uk. 85].

Life Lessons from the Ahlul Bayt (a)

Four things will destroy a house and remove blessings from it: treachery, theft, consumption of alcohol, and adultery.‛

Brief Explanation

These will not only destroy a household; but they will destroy a society as well. Whenever treachery influences the social structure trust will be removed from the people. Whenever theft becomes rampant there will be no peace. Whenever alcoholism grows the level of intellectualism will diminish and the number of children with physical defects will increase. Whenever adultery is the norm the family structure will be destroyed causing the future generation to turn to sin.

Syria: Evidence shows insurgents responsible for gas attack

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said:

“We have plenty of reports on chemical weapons use, which indicate that the opposition regularly resorts to provocations in order to trigger strikes and intervention against Syria.”

“There’s a lot of data. It’s widely available on the Internet. This data is presented in the report, which our experts put together in association with the use of chemical weapons in Aleppo in March this year.”

“There’s also plenty of data on the incidents that occurred in August in Ghouta, near Damascus.”

“All of this will be considered in the Security Council, together with a report, which was submitted by UN experts, confirming that chemical weapons were used.”

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov spent two days in Damascus. He met with Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem and President Bashar al-Assad.

Voice of Russia headlined “Damascus provides Russia with new info on Syrian opposition’s use of chemical weapons - Ryabkov.”

Syria provided “very convincing” evidence, he said. It shows insurgents’ responsibility for Ghouta’s gas attack.

“There is some confusion in this regard,” said Ryabkov. “We received additional proof, which had been gathered and analyzed by the Syrian authorities.”

“They consider it to be evidence of chemical weapons use by the so-called Syrian opposition in eastern Ghouta on the 21st, 22nd, 23rd and 24th.”

“The material received, given to us in Arabic, will be translated into Russian. What kind of conclusions can Russia draw?”

“This will be studied in detail and without hurry. I assure that this could change the course of further talks.”

“As for possible conclusions that may be drawn by Russia from this new evidence.”

“It’s a case that requires further scrutiny. It will take some time and should be done without haste.”

“This evidence was previously given to (UN inspectors head) Mr. Selstrem, who was here in Syria and headed the group of experts.”

His report is “limited in terms of scope, preliminary and insufficient. It’s not “grounds for far-reaching conclusions.”

“We come across the situation often when materials prepared by UN experts and released by the UN secretariat are not grounds for sufficient, comprehensive and far-reaching summaries.”

Ryabkov added that Security Council resolution language should cover only Syria agreeing to eliminate its chemical weapons. Force threats won’t be permitted.

It should support an expected Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) decision backing the US/Russian deal, “and nothing more than that.”

Lavrov said he hasn’t seen evidence Syria supplied, “but I’m sure that the experts are going to work with it and, of course, we’ll provide it to the security council.”

According to Russia’s Presidential Administration Chief of Staff Sergei Ivanov, Moscow and the USSR never supplied chemical weapons to other countries.

“Nobody disputes the fact (it ever) shipped warheads armed with sarin to Syria or any other country.” Toxic agents used in Ghouta were likely “backyard produced.”

US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel accused Russia of supplying Damascus with chemical weapons. He and other US officials lied.

On September 19, Itar Tass headlined “Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister meets Syrian opposition in Damascus.”

Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said Moscow “is ready to submit evidence of Syrian opposition using chemical weapons to the UN on Thursday.”

“We plan to do is as quickly as possible, tonight or tomorrow,” he said. “We expect all available information, not just one investigation into one incident, will be taken into consideration.”

Bogdanov met with Popular Front for Change and Liberation’s Qadri Jamil, as well as Syrian National Council officials.

He called it important to do so. Resolving Syria’s conflict requires their cooperation.

“We are ready to organize contacts not only with the opposition, but also between the opposition groups, maybe in Moscow,” Bogdanov added.

On September 19, Russia Today headlined” “Russia: UN inspectors ignored evidence on Syria,” saying:

Deputy Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov told RT:

“The Syrian authorities have conducted their own sampling and investigation, analysis in terms of possible evidence of the rebels being responsible for the tragic episodes both on August 21, but beyond that also on August 22, 23 and 24.

“This is new material - new material for us. But this is not already completely new material for the UN.”

“This material was discreetly handed over to Ake Sellstrom, the head of the UN mission of experts here (in Syria) which came to investigate the Ghouta incidents.”

“Sellstrom was asked to look into it and eventually factor this new evidence into the final report. It never happened in fact.”

“This is one of the reasons why we criticize the speed with which the report was released and also an incomplete content of this report.”

“We expect the UN Secretariat to both send Sellstrom and his people back to Syria to continue investigation of the three remaining incidents, and also to write a full and comprehensive report against the background of all information they have received.”

Ryabkov’s concerned about Syrian/Russian provided evidence being “nullified and disregarded.”

UN inspectors should follow the same procedure Russia did in analyzing a March Aleppo chemical attack. It showed insurgents responsible for chemical weapons use.

Ryabkov wants Sellstrom’s team to return to Syria. He wants their investigation continued. He wants a legitimate, unbiased report. The one submitted was, one-sided, fraudulent and worthless.

“We are concerned about (further) provocations, Ryabkov stressed. We have seen it before that the moment something better, positive is out there, is looming, you will always find (elements) who would try immediately to change these dynamics and establish a new reality, so to say, through a provocation.”

“And it’s just amazing how little of this understanding is among those who now advocate a very different course fighting the government with weapons in their hands.”

“It’s unforgivable. This is the real crime which they are committing against their own people and their country.”

On Tuesday, Fox News contributor/former congressman Dennis Kucinich and journalist Greg Palkot interviewed Assad in Damascus. He said in part:

“Last week we joined the international agreement of preventing chemical WMDs, and part of this agreement, the main part, is to not to manufacture these armaments, not to store, and not to use, and of course not to distribute, and part of it is to get rid of those materials, the chemical materials.”

“Of course, when we are part now of this agreement, we have to agree on that chapter (o)n getting rid of all these armaments. I mean to destroy them.”

Ten years ago, he said, he proposed a WMD-free Middle East. Washington opposed it. Letting Israel maintain formidable nuclear, chemical and biological weapons reflects US policy.

Asked if joining the Chemical Weapons Convention is a stalling tactic, Assad responded:

“When you join the agreement, you have a mechanism, and you have to obey this mechanism, and according to the history of Syria, we never made an agreement with any party in this world and we didn’t fulfill what we have to do or our role in that agreement, never.”

“We didn’t say that we are joining partially that agreement or that organization. We joined fully. We sent the letter. We sent the document, and (we) are committed to the full requirements of this agreement.”

Asked if he can destroy CWs quickly, and if not, why, he responded:

“I think it’s a very complicated operation technically, and it needs a lot of money. Some estimated about a billion for the Syrian stockpile.”

“We’re not experts in that regard, but that’s the estimate that we’ve had recently.”

“So, you have to ask the experts what do they mean by ‘quickly’ because this has a certain schedule. It needs a year, maybe a little bit less or a little bit more. So, what do you mean by ‘quickly?’ ”

He’s willing to let America destroy his CWs if it’ll pay for it. A “specified” UN organization will handle the task.

Syria has no conditions, Assad said. “In the end, if they’re going to be destroyed, they could be destroyed anywhere.”

“As I said, (they’re) very detrimental to the environment, so whichever country is ready to take risk of these materials let them take it.”

Asked if destroying his CWs by mid-2014 is doable, he said:

“(W)e have to discuss these details with the organization first. This is first. Second, the time is not our problem.”

“It is the problem of the organization. How much time (they) need to implement this agreement.”

“The only thing we have to do is provide the information, and to make them accessible to our sites, which is not a problem. We can do it tomorrow. We don’t have any problem.”

“The problem is how fast they can be in getting rid of any chemical material, because this is a very complicated situation. It’s not about will. It’s about techniques. So, only experts can answer your question.”

Assad wants evidence UN inspectors reported fully assessed. He wants further investigation. He wants unbiased analysis. He wants conclusions based on it.

He questioned suspect videos. No one verified them. They’re easy to fake.

Mother Agnes Mariam de La Croix’s International Support Team for Mussalaha in Syria (ISTEAMS) reported fabricated ones. They’re commonly used. They were used against Gaddafi in Libya. They’ll be used again.

Assad stressed there’s “a lot of forgery on the internet. Any rebel can make sarin. (It’s called) kitchen gas. (W)e know that all those rebels are supported by governments, so any government (with) chemical material can hand it over to” insurgents.

Responding to allegations of a ton of sarin used, as well as rockets and launchers Syria’s army uses, he said:

“This realistically cannot be possible. You cannot use the Sarin beside your troops, this is first.”

“Second, you don’t use WMDs while you are advancing. You’ve not been defeated, and you’re not retreating.”

“The whole situation was in favor of the army. Third, we didn’t use (CWs) when we had bigger problems last year.”

“When they talk about any troops or any unit in the Syrian army that used this kind of weapon, this is false for one reason because chemical weapons can only be used by specialized units.”

“It cannot be used by any other units like infantry or similar traditional units. So, all what you mentioned is not realistic and not true.”

“Definitely, so far as government, we have evidence that the terrorist groups have used Sarin gas and those evidences have been handed over to the Russians.”

“The Russian satellites, since the beginning of these allegations at the 21st of August, they said that they have information through their satellites that the rocket was launched from another area.”

So, why ignore this point of view? So, the whole story doesn’t even hold together. It’s not realistic.”

“In one word, we didn’t use any chemical weapons in the Ghouta, because if you want to use it, you would harm your troops. You would have harmed tens of thousands of civilians living in Damascus.”

Assad wants further investigations. He invited UN inspectors to come in March. He asked them to come back.

More work needs to be done. Other areas need examining. Washington pressured Sellstrom to report quickly. He didn’t finish his mission. It’s suspect. It’s incomplete. It lacks credibility.

Full and accurate analysis shows insurgents alone used chemical weapons. They’re responsible for multiple incidents. They attacked Ghouta with gas. Syrian forces had nothing to do with it, Assad stressed.

Asked if he’d characterized ongoing conflict as civil war, he said:

“No. Civil war start(s) from within society. (Syria’s conflict has) 80 or 83 nationalities coming to fight within your countries supported by foreign countries.”

“What we have is not a civil war. What we have is a war, but it’s a new kind of war.”

“(N)o one has precise numbers. We know that we have tens of thousands of Jihadists” involved 80 to 90% of the rebels or terrorists on the ground are Al Qaeda and their offshoots.”

“We have tens of thousands of Syrians that have died, mainly because of the terrorist attacks, assassinations, and suicide bombers, the majority.”

“More than 15,000″ soldiers were killed, he said. He has no insurgent casualty numbers. “(W)e cannot count them,” he said.

“The majority of the innocent people have been killed by the terrorists, not by the government.”

“No wise government in the world would kill its own people. How can you withstand if you kill your own people for two years and a half, while the West is against you, many of the regional countries are against you, and your people are against you while you kill them? Is it possible? Is it realistic?”

Attacks on villages, residential and suburban areas target terrorists. “(T)he army has to go there to get rid of” them, Assad stressed.

“The army should defend the civilians, not the opposite. You cannot leave the terrorists free, killing the people, assassinating the people, beheading the people and eating their hearts.”

“When we go to defend them, you say you are killing your own people! You don’t, but in every war, you have casualties.”

“This is war. You don’t have clean war. You don’t have soft war, and you don’t have good war.”

Asked about diplomacy and confidence-building measures, he responded:

“Any diplomatic move without having stability and getting rid of the terrorists is going to be just an illusion.”

“Any diplomatic move should start with stopping the flow of the terrorists, the logistical support of those terrorists, the armament support and the money support.”

“Then, you have a full plan. The Syrians could sit on the table, discuss the future of Syria, the political system, the constitution and everything.”

Negotiating with opposition elements “doesn’t mean (doing it) with the terrorists.” Syria is fully committed to peaceful conflict resolution, Assad stressed.

National reconciliation excludes amnesty for terrorists. They have blood on their hands.

At the same time, he said, “we invited every militant in Syria to give up armament, and offered amnesty to whoever laid down his armament and wants to go back to his normal life as a Syrian citizen. Of course we believe in that.”

Assad covered much more important ground. His interview was long and detailed. Everything he said deserves careful consideration.

He’s thoughtful, straightforward, and honest. He says what he means and means what he says. He deserves to be taken seriously.

He priorities peaceful conflict resolution. He wants Syrians alone able to choose who’ll lead them.

He wants foreign intervention stopped. He wants bloodshed ended. Syrians overwhelmingly support him. It’s for good reason.

He’s their last line of defense. Restoring peace depends on him. Don’t expect Fox News to explain.
