A senior Iranian lawmaker says the Western powers have failed in their bids to overthrow the Syrian government and have been forced to bow down to the will of the united Syrians.

“The West has been compelled to accept the demands of the wise Syrian people, and the [Syrian] nation and government will foil the enemies’ plots through unity,” said Esmail Kowsari, a member of the Majlis Committee on National Security and Foreign Policy.

He added that China and Russia, as two permanent members of the UN Security Council, played a “fundamental” role in opposing the UN resolutions against Syria.
Following the Sino-Russian support for Damascus, the West abandoned efforts to topple the Syrian government, he pointed out.
The legislator pointed to the resistance of independent regional countries, including Iran, Lebanon and Syria, against hegemonic powers and urged them to reinforce unity.
Kowsari stated that the strength of the resistance front depends on the unity and alliance of its members.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011. The violence has claimed the lives of many people, including security forces.
The West and the Syrian opposition accuse the government of killing protesters, but Damascus blames ‘outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorist groups’ for the unrest, asserting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.
